Many people aspire to be culinary geniuses, but the thought of what that actually takes can be nothing less than daunting. You can teach yourself to cook well by following the step-by-step directions in a recipe. The advice in this article will give you a head start.

Only cook with wine that you would actually drink. You run the risk of ruining the taste of the dish if you use a wine you haven't tried before. It is possible to find wines that are meant to be used in cooking.

After you finish cooking, let your meal rest and soak in the juices. This is very important for the juices to be absorbed back into your meat. There is plenty of temptation to just whisk the dish off of the grill and eat it immediately. But, you will not enjoy the full flavor and texture of your meal if you engage in this practice. Let your food rest for a while, and you will enjoy tastier meals.

If you are preparing mashed potatoes, add hot milk just before you get ready to mix them. You want to make sure that the milk is not boiling, however. Using hot milk instead of cold milk will make your potatoes mash up light, fluffy and smooth. Boring, lumpy mashed potatoes are for the birds.

Partially freeze meat to make slicing into thin strips easier. This is especially helpful if you are preparing an Oriental dish. If you freeze the meat, it will make it easier to cut into strips as the meat fibers will not stretch or tear as easily. To keep your meat cooking evenly, make sure you let the slices thaw completely before you cook them.

There is an easy way to cut cinnamon rolls. It is not always easy to slice up cinnamon rolls before placing them in the oven to bake. To ease the process, simply put heavy thread beneath the prepared rolls in the position where the cut should be. Gather the thread around each side, then cross it over the top, pulling with a strong force and dividing the roll with the strength of your motion. This will help you get the perfect slices for your cinnamon rolls.

Cooking oil can be used to accurately measure sticky, semisolid foods. Apply a light coating of canola or other oil with little flavor, to your measuring spoon or cup. The ingredient you are measuring will slide out easily, which will prevent messy clean-ups and waste. Peanut butter, honey, and marshmallow are perfect examples of things you can use this tip for.

While garlic is a great addition to many dishes, it has the frustrating feature of rubbing off on your hands. After you are done working with garlic and any other odoriferous ingredients, try rubbing your hands firmly on the inside of your stainless steel sink. Doing this will remove the scent from your hands, and keep it from spreading to the next food you touch.

Keep track of what goes into the ingredients for your recipes. You will often find unhealthy ingredients in one of your cooking essentials. Keep track of the amount of sugar and sodium in the staple products used for your recipe, and make adjustments by omitting additional sugar or salt, to avoid diet-related health issues.

Sharp knives are a kitchen necessity. Dull knives make it harder to cut and are more dangerous to use. It's easier to hurt yourself with a dull knife by forcing it to cut through something than by using a sharp knife to easily slice through it.

Be sure to spread the application of seasoning throughout your cooking time instead of only applying when you start to cook. In this manner, you will be able to enhance the flavors of the final dish.

The advice that was presented in this article can help even the most inexperienced cooks become cooking geniuses. It comes naturally to some, but others need all the help and advice they can get. The information found in the article should have helped you learn what you need to do to be a great cook.
