Here's a novelty food gift that will surprise your friends - someone might have thought of this after seeing all those bean soup mixes in the U.S. Frankly, it doesn't taste as good as monggo guisado from scratch, but it's fun to make and give. Look in the big supermarkets for the seasonings used here. With the right ingredients comes out the right taste and just the right flavor for your guisado.

INSTANT MONGGO GUISADO MIX

You will need:

1 cup dried monggo beans, picked over

2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon pepper
2 cubes chicken or beef bouillon

Here's how:

Put the dried monggo beans in a clean jar. Put everything else in a plastic bag (like a sandwich or ice bag) and tie securely with ribbon or twine. Put the flavoring packet inside the jar. Attach this recipe via a label or tag: Wash the monggo beans in water and remove any that float to the top. Place monggo beans, flavoring packet and 3 cups water in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer 45 minutes or until monggo is tender.
