Not one person here in the Philippines never knew the existence of pan de sal.  Every morning, a long line of pan de sal buyers can be seen in bakeshops. After the morning prayers, it is always good to sit for a while with a cup of coffee, milk, cocoa, or cold drink with pan de sal on the wooden platter.

If you care about your time, there's no need to wait for hours just to accompany your morning with pan de sal. Just bake this homemade pan de sal in your very convenient time and right away you have an instant reward for the morning's glory.

HOMEMADE PAN DE SAL

You will need:

1 cup lukewarm milk (diluted 1:1)
1/4 cup refined sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
2 pieces eggs
3 1/2 to 4 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)

Here's how:

Mix together milk, sugar and salt until dissolved.

Sprinkle yeast in milk mixture and stir until well mixed.

Stir in eggs, then margarine.

Add flour and stir, then handle the dough with your hands.

When the dough starts to leave the sides of the bowl, transfer it onto a lightly floured surface.

Knead until the dough is smooth, elastic and non-sticking (about 15 minutes).

Shape the dough into two equal cylinder or "baston". Roll in breadcrumbs.

With a knife, cut each baston into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion in breadcrumbs.

Place on greased baking sheet and let rise till double (20 to 30 minutes).

Bake in preheated 400oF oven for 12 minutes or until bread is slightly brown.
