Herbalism is a traditional medicinal practice that is based on the use of plants and plant extracts. It also includes other products such as fungal and bee products, as well as minerals, shells and other animal parts. Leaves, flowers, stems, seeds, roots, bark or any other plant part are all considered herbs.

Among other alternative medicine practices, it is widely accepted by the medical community because of its scientific basis and its contribution to modern pharmacology. Herbal medicine plays a big role in the manufacture and development of various drugs for medication or supplement, with 25% of all prescription drugs that are being derived from trees, shrubs and other herbs. Most of these medications are mixtures of herbs, plant extracts, and other organic substances that aids the body in healing by using ingredients that are provided by nature. Herbs are very potent and effective drugs and they do not have negative side effects unlike other drugs that are produced synthetically.

Alfalfa is mainly used to alkalize and detoxify the body. It lowers cholesterol, eases inflammation, and balances the hormones. It is a good treatment for bleeding related disorders, anemia, disorders in the bone, joint, colon, digestive system, and disorders of the skin. Another herb that is widely used is Aloe vera which is used to heal wounds and burns by stimulating cell regeneration. It also has properties that are antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral that helps the body in fighting infection. Cayenne pepper aids in digestion, stops bleeding that is caused by ulcers and helps in improving the blood circulation. It is also good for the kidneys, heart, lungs, spleen, pancreas, and the stomach. Cayenne pepper is also used for treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, sinus infections, colds, and sore throat. Another popular herb is Chamomile which is used as anti inflammatory remedy, stimulates the appetite and aids digestion. It is also used in treatment for diverticulitis, colitis, fever, headaches, and pain. It also has calming effects that helps relieve stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

Cayenne pepper is a popular treatment for arthritis, rheumatism, sinus infections, colds and sore throat. Chamomile is also used as an anti inflammatory remedy, it helps in stimulating the appetite and also helps in promoting digestion. Chamomile is also popular for it calming effects that help in relieving stress, anxiety and insomnia. Other than herbal medicine, you can also find herbal infusion teas in chamomile.

Herbs are very potent drugs that is why one should exercise caution in taking herbal medicine. One should never self medicate and should consult an herbalist and a physician before taking any forms of herbal medication. If taken in larger doses than what is recommended, it can cause various health problems ranging from mild allergies to intoxication that can lead to death. If you are taking any herbal medication and feel any discomfort such as difficulty breathing, you should see your physician immediately as you may be suffering from an anaphylactic reaction.

As with any types of medications, herbs also have negative interactions with each other. It is best to inform your physician if you are taking more than one herb at the same time; either for medication or supplement. This will help your physician monitor your health and your body's reaction to the herbs. Pregnant women should refrain from taking any herbal medication unless advised by a physician as some herbs increase the risk if getting a miscarriage.
