Significance Of Halal Labels On Food And Eateries

By Tristan West
Many of us have encountered the term "halal," but not many of us know what it signifies. Halal can be seen on food marks and restaurants. The term is important for our Muslim pals as it indicates what is allowed for them to eat by their Islamic dietary law. In a country with residents of different religions, the term halal is very important.

Muslims in Islamic nations don't have problems eating in halal eateries and picking up halal products as most likely than not, they are halal-certified. But for those who are in areas that have various religious groups, halal is not as rampant as they would like. Good thing that more establishments are now becoming aware of their customer's preferences.

Halal means lawful or legal. If a food tag has this word on or a eatery alleges they are halal-certified, it means that the preparation of their products is in accordance with the Islamic dietary law, and thus, they are allowed to consume the items.

So what is allowed in Islamic law? There are a number of guidelines, but let's begin with how a meat should be prepared. An animal should be slaughtered by cutting its windpipe and gullet quickly. This method of ritual slaughter is believed to kill immediately and painlessly.

If halal means lawful, haraam is the opposite. Muslims are not allowed to take haraam foods, such as alcohol and pork. A halal-certified eatery and a halal-approved food item should not contain such ingredients. Also, they should be careful withhow they prepare the food, avoiding any contamination. If a spoon was already used for a meal with haraam ingredients, it should not be used any longer to prepare halal-approved food.

Haraam items also comprise of blood, birds of prey or carnivores, animals slaughtered in the name of any god but Allah, corpse of an animal, or those that have been sacrificed to another deity.

Halal-certified eateries should conform to the Islamic dietary laws. And because some products are hard to determine whether they are halal or not, there are Muslim groups who certify food items as halal for buyers. Those products with halal authentication are used as ingredients by halal eateries, just to make very sure that they are meticulously observing the laws.

It's good to know that there are eateries not run by Muslims that still take a great effort to abide Islamic dietary laws. It just means that they honor all their clients and honor their preferences and faiths.
