Mozzarella sticks (Photo credit: TheGirlsNY) |
These are easy to make with packaged frozen puff pastry. As a cheaper alternative, use pie pastry. I used to make this for myself whenever I craved something hot and cheesy! They are fine at room temperature but you can also heat them in a toaster oven before eating.
FLAKY CHEESE STICKS
You will need:
12 ounces frozen puff pastry (available at delis)
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or parmesan)
1 egg, beaten
Here's how:
Roll out the puff pastry on a well-floured board until it is about 1/8-inch thick, forming a rectangular shape more or less. Spread half of the rectangle with softened butter and sprinkle the same half with cheese. Fold over the plain half. Cut the pastry into 3-inch strips, then cut each strip into 1-inch pieces. Twist each piece and set on an ungreased baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and bake at 400oF for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool and store in airtight containers.
Yield: about 5 dozen cheese sticks
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Storage: 1 week, refrigerated or 2 months, frozen
Packaging ideas: Pack in clear plastic jars and decorate only the 'neck' of the jar with twine or other pieces of decor so that the contents are clearly visible.
