Mid-Week Budget Stretchers

Put a touch of affordability to your everyday cooking with these ideas! Start with homemade longganisa for a more economical alternative to cold cuts like hotdog and sausages. Create delightful one-dish meals that combine meat and vegetables, so there's no need for a second dish! Then transform plain fried fish into tastier sarciado. Your family will love these dishes, and you'll love the way they give extra savings to your budget.

BEANS con CARNE


You will need:


3          bunches (350 g) sitaw, cut into 2" long pcs
4          cloves garlic, crushed
1          medium onion, sliced
200      grams ground pork
1/2-1    cup water
1           pouch (200 g) Del Monte Tomato Sauce

Here's how:


1. Saute' garlic, onion and pork. Add water, Del Monte Tomato Sauce, 1/2 tsp. iodized salt (or 1/2 tbsp rock salt) and 1/8 tsp. pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
2. Add sitaw and simmer for another 5-10 minutes. Serve hot.

Health Note: Rich in Vitamin B1 - prevents beri-beri.

Tip: Get the most from your shopping budget. Buy pork at the wet market where it is cheaper than at the supermarket.

LONGGANISA KITCHENOMICA

You will need:


1          kilo lean ground pork
1          can (140 g) Del Monte Tomato Sauce
3          tbsp Del Monte Red Cane Vinegar
1          head garlic, crushed
1/2       cup white sugar
2-1/2    tsp pepper
2/3        tsp iodized salt (or 2/3 tbsp rock salt)
2           tbsp soy sauce

Here's how:


1. Mix all ingredients well. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
2. Place 2 tbsp. of mixture on wax paper or clean plastic. Roll to form longganisa shape.
3. Remove paper or plastic and fry desired number of longganisa pieces until brown. Store the rest in freezer.

Health Tip: Rich in Niacin - promotes normal digestion and healthy skin.

Tip: Longganisa will last for about one month when stored in the freezer.

BANGUS en TOCHO


You will need:


1             medium bangus (1/2 kilo) cleaned and sliced into 6 pieces)
3             cloves garlic, crushed
1             medium onion, sliced
1             tbsp ginger strips
1             can (140 g) Del Monte Tomato Sauce
1             cup water
1             cube (65 g) tahure, liquid removed.
1              square (70g) tokwa
2              stalks kinchay, cut into 1" long pcs

Health Note: Excellent source of Lysine - promotes growth in the young.
